Neil Strickland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Neil P. Strickland (* 1966 ) is a British mathematician who studies algebraic topology .

Strickland received his PhD from the University of Manchester in 1992 with Nigel Ray ( Bott periodicity and Hopf rings ). As a post-doctoral student , he was a Moore Instructor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then a Research Fellow at Trinity College , Cambridge . In 1998 he went to the University of Sheffield , where he is a professor.

Strickland deals with stable homotopy theory , using methods of algebraic geometry (formal groups) and category theory, as well as cobordism theory and elliptic spectra (with Michael J. Hopkins ).

Life

In 2005 he received the Whitehead Prize for his contributions to algebraic topology , in particular the development and application of the theory of formal groups in homotopy theory and the study of elliptic cohomology theories.
