Nilus the Elder
Nilus the Elder , also called Nilus of Ankyra (* in or near Ankara ; † 430) was a civil servant in the Eastern Roman Empire and later a monk.
Nilus worked under the emperors Arcadius and Theodosius II as an official and politician. Later, he and his son Theodolus settled on Mount Sinai as an anchorite .
In his writings he was very committed to monasticism and its dissemination; but also always warned against their secularization. He is counted among the church fathers .
His feast day is November 12th.
He is not to be confused with Nilus the Younger .
