β Bootis is a star in the Bear Keeper constellation . Although it was designated β by Bayer, it is not the second brightest, but the fifth brightest star in the constellation, but represents the head of the mythological figure of the boat . Β Bootis bears the historical proper name Nekkar , which is probably a mistranscription from Arabic بقار, DMG baqqār  represents 'cattle herder'.

Nekkar has an apparent magnitude of 3.49 mag and belongs to the spectral class G8 IIIa. It is around 225 light years from the sun .
