Carenque necropolis

The necropolis of Carenque ( Portuguese Necrópole de Carenque ) consists of three rock tombs ( Portuguese Hypogea ) in the limestone of "Monte do Tojal" in "Vila Chã" between Carenque and "Moinhos da Funcheira", near Amadora in the Lisbon district in Portugal . They were discovered and excavated by Manuel Heleno in 1932 and placed under protection in 1936.

description

The facilities of the necropolis are of great interest for understanding the Iberian prehistory. The construction and the first Disposal of human remains are from the late New Stone Age (about 3000 v. Chr.) The "artificial caves" were in the subsequent copper time nachgenutzt .

The rock tombs show features of other sites in other regions (e.g. necropolis of Alapraia , rock-dome tombs of Palmela , rock-dome tombs of São Pedro do Estoril and "São Paulo"). They have a characteristic architecture, with access from the east through an often not completely preserved corridor, which leads to a round portal (a kind of soul hole ), behind which the likewise round chamber is located. The chamber and passage were closed with limestone slabs.

The dead may have been placed in the fetal position on the walls, surrounded by the grave goods . The finds consist of some bones from people who are representative of the type of people who lived in southern Extremadura . The additions consist of ceramics , metallic materials, stone tools and votive offerings . The most common are limestone idols in the form of smooth cylinders, adzes made of limestone and lunulae (half moons), but especially often damaged slate idols .

The archaeological finds from the excavations are in the Museu Nacional de Arqueologia in Lisbon . Nearby is the das Bautas necropolis.
