Nel Noddings (born January 19, 1929 ) is an American educationalist , feminist and philosopher who deals with the ethics of care.

biography

Nel Noddings studied at Montclair State College, New Jersey , where she earned a bachelor's degree in math and physical education . At Rutgers University she received her Master's in mathematics and finally at the Stanford University to Ph. D. in Educational Sciences.

Noddings was active in many areas of the American education system. After completing her studies, she taught mathematics in elementary and high schools for 23 years until she earned her Ph. D. and emerged as an academic and philosopher. Her main areas from then on were the philosophy and theory of educational sciences and ethics of welfare. She was admitted to Stanford University in 1977 and received honors for outstanding teaching in 1981, 1982 and 1997. For four years she also became dean of the local School of Education .

After leaving Stanford, she taught at Columbia University and Colgate University. She was president of the Philosophy of Education Society and the John Dewey Society . She has been retired since 1998.

She has been married since 1950 and had 10 children. She described her early experiences with upbringing and her close family relationships as key experiences in developing her philosophical position.

Nel Nodding's work is interdisciplinary between educational science and philosophy. In the meantime she has created an extensive journalistic work in this area. She has published many books especially since 2000. She is a prominent representative of the ethics of welfare and has also published corresponding educational concepts. Another focus is moral education. She created the model of the various levels of care that came to be known as the Caring Curriculum . These include the dimensions Self, friends and peers, distant others, plants, animals, human made world and ideas.
