Nelly Puetz
Nelly Pütz (born August 12, 1939 in Köttenich near Düren , † July 22, 1959 in Middelkerke , Belgium ) was a German kindergarten teacher who received the highest awards for saving four children from drowning at the risk of her own life. It is namesake of various schools, kindergartens and streets.
Pütz came from a simple background. In 1959 she worked at a kindergarten in Aachen and looked after a children's group during a summer camp on the Belgian coast. On July 22, 1959, she saved four children from drowning before she drowned herself trying to save more children.
Pütz was posthumously awarded the highest order of the Belgian King for bravery and personal commitment on May 10, 1962. On September 17, 1959, the Belgian king named a kindergarten after her in Lüdenscheid . The Nelly-Pütz vocational college in Düren (since 1989) and the Nelly-Pütz kindergarten in Huchem-Stammeln , as well as the Nelly-Pütz-Strasse in Huchem-Stammeln and Lüdenscheid , are also named after her .
