Nelson Chamisa (* 2. February 1978 in Masvingo , Rhodesia ) is a Zimbabwean lawyer and politician , currently president of the MDC Alliance (MDC) and a member of the House of Assembly ( German  meeting house ) for the constituency Kuwadzana East in the capital Harare . Chamisa was the MDC Alliance's presidential candidate in the 2018 general election ; he was defeated by Emmerson Mnangagwa .

Life

After graduating from high school, Nelson Chamisa completed an apprenticeship at Harare Polytechnic, where he became involved in student policy when he became head of the student council in 1998 in his first year. He was fired from college because of his student engagement and as the leader of an anti-government demonstration.

Since he was elected Secretary General of the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) in 1998 , Nelson Chamisa and his colleagues have set up offices across the country.

Chamisa holds a BA in Political Science and Public Administration and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Zimbabwe . In 2016 he earned a degree in theology .

In 1999 Chamisa was a founding member of the MDC and became chairman of the party's youth organization. In 2003, Nelson Chamisa became the MDC's youngest MP at the age of 25. His mentor was Morgan Tsvangirai, who died in February 2018 .

In 2007, when crackdown on the opposition was on his way to a conference in Europe, State Security agents beat Chamisa at Harare Airport and fractured his skull. In 2009 he was named the youngest minister in the establishment of a bipartisan government that lasted until 2013. He is the current representative of the Kuwadzana East constituency in the national parliament.

It is popular among young voters and the unemployed. In the 2018 election, 43.5% of registered voters were under 35 years of age, so their voting behavior played a key role. However, he was defeated by incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa. He then claimed that the election results were falsified, but could not prove it in court. Six of his supporters were shot dead by soldiers during protests against the election results. In November 2018, Chamisa protested against the accusation that he had called for the protests in front of a commission of inquiry headed by Kgalema Motlanthe .

In 2019 Chamisa was re-elected as party chairman.

Chamisa is married and has one daughter.
