Life

He grew up as the son of the Jewish businessman Moses Meyer-Wittgenstein (1768–1829) and his wife Bernhardine (Breindel) Simon (1768–1829) in Korbach , in what was then the Principality of Waldeck . At first he worked in the family business of his parents, who mainly traded in wool.

In 1839 he left Korbach with his brother Richard Simon Wittgenstein to expand the wool trade in the trade fair city of Leipzig . In the same year he was evangelically baptized in the Dresden Kreuzkirche in the name of Hermann Christian and married in Gohlis Fanny Figdor from Kittsee (* April 7, 1814, † October 21, 1890), daughter of an important Jewish family in Vienna, which was also before converted to Protestant faith at the time of marriage. Among other things, they took care of the young violinist Joseph Joachim , a cousin of Fannys, who studied at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1843 to 1849 .
