The Nelson Monument is a memorial in the Scottish city ​​of Glasgow . In 1970 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The memorial was erected to commemorate Lord Nelson's victory and death at the Battle of Trafalgar . Scottish architect David Hamilton provided the design . The public paid for the £ 2,000 building. Shortly after construction, lightning struck the monument, which left visible, but no structural damage. The event was immortalized in a picture by John Knox on display at the nearby People's Palace .

The statue is located in the western part of Glasgow Green near the right bank of the Clyde . It is an approximately 44 m high obelisk that rests on a pedestal with a square floor plan. A cast iron railing surrounds the monument. In 1965 a plaque was added to commemorate the pioneering work of James Watts on Glasgow Green.
