Nelson Pond

Nelson Pond, 2020

Nelson Luiz Sperle Teich (born July 24, 1957 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian oncologist and entrepreneur. He was Minister of Health in the Bolsonaro cabinet from April 16, 2020 to May 15, 2020 .

Life

Teich studied medicine at the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) and clinical oncology until 1990 at the Instituto Nacional de Câncer , worked at various hospitals, received the Master of Business Administration (MBA) twice, in 1998 and 2006, and was a doctoral candidate ( PhD) from the University of York in England after receiving a Master of Science (MSc) in Economic Evaluation for Health Technology Assessment in York.

He conducted research and is also a partner in Teich & Teich Health Care and managing director at MedInsight . From 2010 to 2011 he was a consultant at the Israelita Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo .

Political career

In 2018 he became an informal advisor to Jair Bolsonaro's presidential campaign , initially being interviewed for the post of health minister , with Bolsonaro then appointing Luiz Henrique Mandetta . In succession to Mandetta, Teich was appointed as the new Minister of Health on April 16, 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil .

Before his appointment, Teich was previously considered to be politically inexperienced, but is on the line of President Bolsonaro. B. against the spatial distancing promoted by the governors of the individual states , which serves to protect against infection. He took office at a time when over 30,000 confirmed cases of infection and over 1900 deaths had already been reported in Brazil.

On May 15, 2020, he resigned from the ministerial office because of differences of opinion with Bolsonaro, who had passed him over several times.
