Luiz Henrique Mandetta (born November 30, 1964 in Campo Grande , Brazil ) is a Brazilian child orthopedist and politician, member of the Democratas (DEM). Life

Mandetta comes from an influential family in Mato Grosso do Sul , his father is the orthopedist Hélio Mandetta, his mother Maria Olga Mandetta. Mandetta is a medical graduate of the Universidade Gama Filho , specializing in orthopedics through the Orthopedic Service of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul and sub-specializing in pediatric orthopedics through the Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Atlanta . He spent his military time as a military doctor in the central hospital of the army and received the rank of lieutenant .

Political career

Member of the Congress, 2010–2018

Mandetta joined the Partido do Movimento Demcrática Brasileiro (PMDB) in 2003 , and in 2010 he changed parties and joined the Democratas (DEM), as they supported him in the upcoming candidacy for Congress.

In the elections in Brazil in 2010 , he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the National Congress (54th legislative period) for the first time with 78,733 valid votes (6.15%) for his home state Mato Grosso do Sul . He was re-elected for the 55th legislative period in the 2014 elections in Brazil with 57,374 valid votes (4.49%).

During his time in Congress, Mandetta was best known for opposing the left-wing Labor Party- led government's health policies, particularly the “ Mais Medicos ” program that brought Cuban doctors to the remotest corners of Brazil . He voted for the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff . He later endorsed Constitutional Amendment No. 95 of 2016, which introduced a new tax system. In April 2017, he voted for labor reform. In August 2017, he voted to continue the lawsuit against President Michel Temer .

Minister of Health, 2019-2020

On November 20, 2018, Mandetta was announced by President-elect Jair Bolsonaro as the new Minister of Health. On allegations of irregularities when he was Minister of Health of Campo Grande , Mandetta said a week before confirmation that he had spoken to Bolsonaro about the details of the case. In his words, the President said that the complaint alone was not a reason to block the nomination . Mandetta is currently being investigated for alleged procurement fraud, influencing trade and undeclared campaign donations.

In the context of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, Mandetta gained notoriety because he repeatedly contradicted the belittling words of his president in public.

President Bolsonaro removed Mandetta from office on April 16, 2020. On the same day, he was succeeded by oncologist, entrepreneur and health advisor Nelson Teich .
