Nemacheilus is a genus of the brook loaches (Nemacheilidae). The fish live in rivers in Asia.

features

Nemacheilus - species are elongated fish with an approximately cylindrical physique. Only the tail stalk is flattened laterally. The head is flattened dorsoventrally. The attachment of the dorsal fin lies in front of the base of the pelvic fin. The dorsal fin is supported by 3 to 6 unbranched and 7 to 12 branched soft rays. In the anal fin there are 3 to 4 unbranched and 4 to 6 branched soft rays. The scales are tiny and get larger towards the tail. There are also unscaled species. The sideline can be completely or incompletely formed. The mouth is below, the lips are thick. There are three pairs of barbels on the upper jaw , two near the tip of the mouth and another near the corner of the mouth. The pharynx are small and arranged in a row. The front chamber of the swim bladder is divided into two parts and lies in an ossified envelope, the rear chamber is only rudimentary.
