Neolindleya camtschatica is the only species of the monotypic plant genus Neolindleya within the orchid family (Orchidaceae). It occurs in eastern Asia.

Description and ecology

Neolindleya camtschatica is a vigorous, upright, perennial herbaceous plant and can reach heights of up to 1 meter. The root tubers typical of orchids are largely reduced in this species, they are small and elongated, at the end they are not extended into a root. There is no leaf rosette at flowering time. The numerous stem leaves are rounded, with a wavy edge, they can reach a diameter of up to 20 centimeters. In contrast to the closely related genus Galearis, there are always more than two stem leaves.

The flowers are relatively small but numerous, they sit above green, lanceolate bracts. Its lateral sepals are protruding, the middle one forms a loose helmet with the petals over the very short, compact stylus column . The lip has a characteristic shape, it is elongated, longer than wide, and parallel-sided, drawn out into three small, lobed lobes at the end, the lateral lobes being larger than the central one. The nectarless spur is directed downwards. The flowers are mostly monochrome, colored in various shades of purple-violet. Despite the striking flowers, autogamy is assumed.

The diploid chromosome set is given as 2n = 36 to 38.

Occurrence

Neolindleya camtschatica occurs in South Korea (very rare here), in the north of Honshū , on Hokkaidō , the Kuril Islands and in the southern part of Kamchatka .

Neolindleya camtschatica grows in light forests, on forest edges, and in partially shaded meadows and grasslands. It is also found in disturbed habitats such as roadsides. In most of its range, it is considered not rare. It occurs in Russia together with Platanthera tipuloides , Platanthera metabifolia and Dactylorhiza aristata .

Taxonomy

The position and affiliation of this species is controversial. Numerous authors assign them to the genera Galearis (as in the Kew World Checklist), Gymnadenia or Platanthera . A more recent molecular study, based on the comparison of homologous DNA sequences, revealed a clade from the genera Aceratorchis (monotypic), Aorchis (3 species), Galearis and Neolindleya , which together form the sister group to the genus Platanthera . This confirms earlier studies with lesser ones Taxon coverage Although the authors express themselves very cautiously (taking into account the low level of support for the clade, we suggest tentatively including the three other genera under Galearis . This has to be checked in later studies), many authors took this as an opportunity to to synonymize the smaller genera under Galearis . Since in all studies this species outside of Galearis s. st. stands, but these would also be compatible with a separate class allocation.

A synonym is Neolindleya decipiens (Lindl.) Kraenzl.
