Neolog Synagogue (Žilina)
The Neolog Synagogue in Žilina , a Slovak town in the Žilina district , was built between 1928 and 1931. The derelict synagogue at 1 Kuzmányho Street is a protected cultural monument .
history
The synagogue was built according to plans by the architect Peter Behrens after he won the architectural competition, in which Lipót Baumhorn and Josef Hoffmann also took part.
The building was only used as a synagogue for ten years. After the war it was first used as a theater and concert hall and then as a university auditorium. Until 2010 it was used as a cinema. The renovations led to a complete change in the interior. Since 2011, a citizens' initiative that has rented the building from the Jewish community has been trying to research the history of the building and then restore it to its original state if possible. The synagogue building is to become a house for cultural events.
