The Neozoarcidae are a fish family from the group of eel mother relatives (Zoarcales). All species of the Neozoarcidae occur in the northwestern Pacific.

features

Like all eel mothers, they have a very elongated, scaled or flaky body, which in this subfamily is 4.5 to 17 cm long. The dorsal and anal fins are low and have grown together with the caudal fin to form a surrounding fin border. The dorsal fin is supported by up to 75 soft rays in Zoarchias . In the anal fin, the first is the longest hard ray. The pectoral fins are small and are supported by 6 to 10 fin rays. They can also be missing, the pelvic fins are always missing. The sideline is absent, with only one or two rows of superficial neuromasts. The sensory system on the head is well developed. The number of Branchiostegal rays is 6 or 7, those of the vertebrae 96 to 133.

Systematics

The Neozoarcinae were established in 1902 by Jordan and Snyder for the genera Neozoarces and Zoarchias and initially assigned as a subfamily to the slime fish (Blenniidae). Makushok introduced the Neozoarcinae to the eel nuts in 1961. 1994 Anderson puts the subfamily to the spine backs (Stichaeidae). At the beginning of 2010, the Russian scientist OA Radchenko and two colleagues revised this shift and put the Neozoarcinae back to the eel mother, after they had determined using molecular genetic methods that the average genetic difference between Neozoarces from the subfamily Neozoarcinae and the other subfamilies of the eel mother was only 11 , 9%, while it was 13.9% when compared with the Stichaeidae and 14.0% when compared with the Ronquils (Bathymasteridae), the butterfish (Pholidae), Ptilichthys goodei and Zaprora silenus . In 2015 Radchenko made the Neozoarcidae into an independent family after he determined with the help of molecular biological data that the sea wolves (Anarhichadidae) are more closely related to the eel mother than the Neozoarcidae. This was adopted in the Catalog of Fishes in mid-2018.
