Newari (also: Nepal Bhasa , नेपाल भाषा ) is a language of an ethnic group in Nepal , the Newar , who are most strongly represented in the Kathmandu Valley . Overall, speakers of the Newari make up 3.6% of the population of Nepal. Newari belongs to the Tibetan Burman branch of the Sino- Tibetan language family . It is therefore not related to the Indo-Aryan Nepali , the main language of Nepal.

Writing system

Next to Bodo, Newari is the only Sino-Tibetan and thus also the only Tibetan-Burman language that is written in Devanagari script . Otherwise it is written in a few other scripts, mainly Ranjanja , Prachalit , Brahmi , Golmol . All fonts are written from left to right and consist of consonant characters, which are combined with diacritical vowel marks to form syllables .

Dialects and influences

There are five main dialects , namely Yen-Yala , Khwopa , Pahari , Dolakha and Chitlang . In addition to these dialects, there are some sub-dialects spoken in the Kathmandu Valley and other parts of Nepal. These sub-dialects can be found in the vicinity of Kathmandu , Lalitpur , Bhaktapur , Chitlang and Dolakha . The dialect spoken in Bandipur is the oldest spoken form of Khwapa Bhaaye . The dialect spoken in Chainpur , Bhojpur , Terhathum and Palpa is related to that in Kathmandu and Patan . The dialect spoken in Ridi , Baglung and Arughat is more closely related to that in Bhaktapur.
