The statue of Nepomuk is a representation of St. Johannes Nepomuk , the patron saint of water and bridges, in the area of the former Rengering monastery on the border between Ostbevern and Milte . It stands together with the bridge under monument protection .

description

The statue of St. Strictly speaking, Nepomuk is no longer in the area of Ostbevern, but already in Milte. The former Rengering monastery is part of Ostbevern and is on the list of architectural monuments in Ostbevern because most of it was there, while the bridge and statue are among the architectural monuments of Warendorf-Milte .

The statue is about 1.60 m high. She wears the garb of a canon : Birett , Mozetta , choir shirt and cassock . In his right hand the saint carries a flat metal cross, over which he looks at the bridge, the left he has placed on his heart. At his feet is a putti holding a palm branch towards the saint , an attribute of his martyrdom . In a gesture of silence, the putto places the fingers of her left hand on her lips. This is intended to indicate that Nepomuk did not want to break the confessional secret against King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia.

The Latin inscription is on the base :

"PraesIDIIs nos oro
tVIs tVeare Ioannes
InstrVe MVta LoqVaX
LIngVa sILere LoqVI"

("Under your protection, I ask, protect us, Johannes. Keep our tongues in check and make them eloquent through silence.") From this chronodistich the sum of the capitalized Roman numbers can be the year 1754 (Σ IDIIVIVIIVMVLVXLIVILLVI = MDCCLIV), the year the statue was created.
