Netatalk is a free software suite , the components of the AppleTalk - protocol family under POSIX compatible operating systems is available. This means that Unix operating systems can be operated as file, time and print servers for Macintosh computers.

Components include:

  • AppleTalk router process and stack with all protocols up to OSI layer 5 ,
  • AFP server ( afpd),
  • PAP server ( papd),
  • Timelord, a time server service ( timelord),
  • Frontend programs for services such as
    • AEP (AppleTalk "Ping", aecho),
    • NBP manipulations ( nbplkup, nbprgstr, nbpunrgstr, getzones),
    • PAP client to send print jobs to PAP-enabled printers,
  • further programs for the management of Mac -specific data structures.

The AFP server in newer versions not only offers AppleTalk as a transport protocol, but also the much faster TCP / IP ( port 548).

development

Netatalk was developed by the Research Systems Unix Group at the University of Michigan and was migrated to SourceForge in 2000 . In October 2004 Netatalk 2.0 was released. New features were AFP version 3.1 support for long file names and UTF-8 character sets, file and volume sizes> 2 GB, compatibility with macOS , integration of CUPS , Kerberos support as well as persistent storage of file and directory IDs as well as numerous bug fixes to previous versions.

Netatalk currently supports the operating systems FreeBSD , Linux , macOS , OpenBSD , NetBSD , Solaris and Tru64 UNIX .

With version 2.0.5, Netatalk is compatible with the Time Machine data backup software and thus enables backups over the network up to version Mac OS X 10.6.8.

As of version Mac OS X Lion 10.7, however, Time Machine requires at least Netatalk 2.2.
