The Nethan is a river in the Scottish council area of South Lanarkshire .

It rises at a height of 433 m on the slopes of Priesthill Height on the border between South Lanarkshire in the east and East Ayrshire in the west. The hamlet of Glenbuck is around two kilometers south . The Irvine, which drains to the west, has its source nearby . Along its 21 km course, the Nethan flows mainly to the northeast. Only on the approximately seven-kilometer section between Lesmahagow and Blackwood does it follow a northerly direction. The difference in altitude between the source and the mouth at Crossford in the Clyde is 374 m.

The Nethan flows through a sparsely populated region of Scotland. Besides Lesmahagow, Blackwood and Crossford, it touches a few small hamlets. Numerous streams flow along its course, of which the Logan Water and the Scots Burn are at least a few kilometers long. Near the estuary, the ruins of Craignethan Castle towers above the river.
