Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1876 founded Royal Netherlands Institute for Zeeonderzoek (NIOZ) ( English Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research dt. Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research ) is an independent research institute in the Netherlands that works closely with the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NOW) cooperates. The NIOZ is one of the oldest oceanographic institutes in the world. Its headquarters are in 't Horntje on the island of Texel .

Statutory task

The task at hand is multidisciplinary marine research in coastal and continental shelf areas of the seas and also in deep-sea regions through close collaboration between physicists, chemists, geologists and biologists. As far as possible, research is carried out in relation to politics and the population.

Structures, employees and promotion of young talent

The NIOZ currently employs 250 people, 165 of them in permanent, permanent positions. It maintains close contacts with university research centers and other marine research institutes around the world. This happens particularly closely with four institutes in the German state of Bremen through the joint organization NEBROC (Netherlands Bremen Oceanography). Here it contributes to the training of young researchers through internships and project positions. Relevant areas of expertise are: physical and chemical oceanography , marine geology , biology , toxicology and biogeochemistry .

To carry out its tasks, the NIOZ maintains laboratories , larger experimental facilities and three research vessels (RV Pelagia, RV Navicula and RV Stern) for on-site project exploration . There are also their own technical workshops that develop and build new equipment themselves if necessary. The publishing office for the publication of the in-house " Journal of Sea Research " ( ISSN  1385-1101 ) and the headquarters of the Land-Ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone (LOICZ) also belong to the institute.

Main research areas

The institute's research projects are dominated by two main topics:

  1. Natural and man-made factors of climate change
  2. Marine ecology and sustainability

The main focus is on processes and mechanisms that determine ecological and climate change. The results of the research are used to provide government and policy advice on the effects of climate change on society and on the sustainable use of the oceans and fishing grounds.
