history

Neudorf is located south of the center of Strasbourg and used to be in front of the city wall. There were only a few gates to get into the center: the Spitaltor ( Porte de l'Hôpital , which still exists today), the Metzgertor (to the Place d'Austerlitz ) and the Citadel Gate .

There used to be many wetlands with streams (Ziegelwasser, Bubbenwasser, Krummer Rhein ( Krimmeri ), the Riepberg-Graben) and mills, while at first there were only a few buildings in Neudorf. The "Ménagerie" was a 17th century house built by the moneylender François Joseph de Klinglin. It was demolished in 1967.

After the German annexation of Alsace-Lorraine in 1871, the population grew rapidly. At the end of the 19th century, the quarter became part of the greater Strasbourg area. Many buildings were built during this time: the Neufeld School, the Musau School, the Schluthfeld School, the orphanage and the Aloysius Church ( Église Saint-Aloyse ). In 1898 Neudorf was connected to the tram.

Racing Strasbourg was founded in 1906 as FC Neudorf .

A bombardment destroyed most of the houses on September 6, 1944. After the war there was another increase in population. Neudorf became a heavily populated Strasbourg district with more than 39,000 inhabitants.
