Location of Neudorf in Kempten (Allgäu)

Neudorf is a part of the Kempten district of Sankt Mang that has risen up and used to be a village. The name Neudorf has no relation to new , but is based on the historical place names Nitdorf or Nytdorff. Nit or Nyt means zeal.

"Nitdorf" was first mentioned in 1386. In 1525 the imperial city of Kempten exercised tax law and jurisdiction in Neudorf. In the same year two mills were in operation. A hammer mill was mentioned in 1550. In the following decades, water hammers, forges and grinding mills were mentioned.

Around 1770 the hammer forge was owned by the imperial city. In 1819, one year after the formation of the rural community Sankt Mang , Neudorf consisted of 8 properties with 41 residents who belonged to the main Lenzfried team .

From 1864 the mechanical cotton twining mill, later called Denzler AG , was established. In 1900 Neudorf consisted of 43 houses and 756 inhabitants.

In 1912, the municipal administration was moved from Lenzfried to Ludwigstrasse and eight years later to Schelldorf to Duracher Strasse. The community names Schelldorf , Neudorf, Kottern and Drahtzug (already belonged to Kottern) were abolished by the government of Swabia with a resolution of September 29, 1962 by municipal ordinance. The four parts of the settlement of Sankt Mang, whose name could no longer be abbreviated as St. Mang, were united on the basis of the same resolution. Ten years later, the community in Kempten was incorporated.

In 1991 Denzler AG gave up operations. A few years later, the Kempten-based company Ott Hydromet moved into parts of the company building.
