The New Main Bridge Ochsenfurt is a road bridge in Lower Franconia that spans the Main at river kilometer 271.44 and, as part of the federal highway 13, connects Ochsenfurt with the Kleinochsenfurt district. The bridge has two lanes and a footpath on each side and a cycle path on one side. The building was erected to relieve the old Ochsenfurt Main Bridge and inaugurated on June 8, 1954.
history
The New Main Bridge in Ochsenfurt was built between 1951 and 1954 in order to manage the heavy and through traffic on Bundesstraße 13, which used to be the connecting axis between Würzburg and Munich, to direct Ochsenfurt and to remove the narrow Old Main Bridge as a bottleneck. Due to the problematic foundation conditions, a steel bridge that is light compared to prestressed concrete was built, which spans the Main without a river pillar. The individual prefabricated steel segments were transported by train or ship from Aschaffenburg to Ochsenfurt and assembled on site, partly with a floating crane. The building was inaugurated on June 8, 1954. The construction project cost 3.1 million DM at the time, which today corresponds to around 8 million €.
In particular, corrosion damage resulted in the first reinforcement of the steel structure of the bridge superstructure in 2001. In the following year, large areas of the underside of the bridge had to be hung with nets to protect against falling concrete parts. In addition, to secure the sidewalk cantilever arms against stray vehicles, steel sliding walls were set up on both sides over the entire length of the bridge. In 2004, a limitation of the bridge's load-bearing capacity was averted by further extensive reinforcement measures on the concrete deck and the steel structure. A sufficient load-bearing capacity could only be determined until 2008.
After the opening of the Goßmannsdorfer Main Bridge at the end of 2009, the New Ochsenfurt Main Bridge was closed to vehicles with a total weight of more than 3.5 tons. Since repairs to the superstructure turned out to be uneconomical, the planning approval procedure for the renewal of the Main Bridge was initiated on December 13, 2011. In 2016 the bridge was demolished.
Construction of the bridge from 1954
The bridge superstructure of the 238 m long girder bridge is a steel construction . The connections between the steel parts are riveted . The building system consists in the longitudinal direction of a three-span continuous beam with spans of 68 m in the two peripheral fields and 102.0 m in the central main field. In the transverse direction, the bridge has a two-web T- beam with steel, haunched solid wall main girders and a reinforced concrete deck .
Construction of the planned new building
The old structure, including the pillars and abutments, is to be demolished. A haunched, 239 m long prestressed concrete box girder bridge on new substructures is planned as a new building in the same location. The structure should have spans of 66.5 m and 68.50 m in the peripheral fields and 104.0 m in the central main field.
