The New Jewish Cemetery Lechenich is a burial site in Lechenich , a district of Erftstadt in the Rhein-Erft district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ), laid out at the end of the 19th century . The cemetery is located on Römerhofweg . Like all Jewish cemeteries in the urban area of the city of Erftstadt, the cemetery is owned by the Cologne Synagogue Community , and the city of Erftstadt is responsible for maintaining the cemeteries.

history

Before this cemetery was established, the dead of the Lechenich Jewish community were buried in the old Jewish cemetery at the Schleifmühle .

The property was bought by the Lechenich Jewish community in 1892 because the old cemetery was full. The oldest surviving tombstone ( Mazewa ) is for Wolf Simon, who died in 1897. In 1902 the banker Georg von Bleichröder was buried here, but in 1911 his family had him transferred to the Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery in Berlin. Today there are still 31 tombstones in the cemetery. The last funeral took place in 1940.

Due to the agricultural use of the cemetery area during the National Socialist era , the surviving tombstones are no longer in their original location.
