The New Moosbergsee is an artificial body of water that, like the Lange-Köchel-See, has been naturally flooded by precipitation since it was first formed as the remaining open pit of the former hard stone quarry in Werdenfels . The former pit, which now contains the lake, was created after the surface mining of glaucous quartzite was exhausted and continued below the level of the surrounding Murnau moss. After the mining activities ended, the pit filled up within a few years.
