Town hall in Prachatice

The New Town Hall in Prachatice (German Prachatitz ), a town in the Jihočeský kraj region (South Bohemia) in the Czech Republic , was built in 1902/03. The town hall on the market square is a protected cultural monument.

history

Due to the growing need for space, the city administration decided at the meeting on June 12, 1901 to buy the Meerwald-Haus from the city savings bank, which was connected to the old town hall and city theater , in order to build a new building there. At the meeting on April 5, 1902, the purchase price of 14,000 crowns was approved. There was only one applicant for the tender, the local master builder Rudolf Zobel, whose facade design did not appear to be too ostentatious to the city representatives, who wanted the new building to be decorated with sgraffiti . Zobel then sought support from the Viennese master builder Anton Schurda, whose proposal was accepted by the city council on August 21, 1902. The artistic executives were the academic painter Johann Viertelberger and the academic sculptor Georg Leiseck from Vienna.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary, a facade renovation was carried out in 2003/04.

description

The New Town Hall was built in the neo-renaissance style with neo-Gothic style elements on the ground floor. The 30 meter high tower is equipped with a tower clock and the sgraffito "Presentation of the certificate of freedom to the city of Prachatice in 1382". In the niche of the richly structured gable is the figure of Prachatitia . Between the windows of the first floor the two larger than life sculptures are trade and vigilantes . Above it, a sgraffito can be seen that takes up the entire width of the facade and depicts the mule train on the Goldener Steig between Passau and Prachatice.

Seven important men from Prachatice are depicted in the covings of the main cornice:
