New year's paper of the Society of Fraumünster

The Gesellschaft zu Fraumünster in Zurich has been publishing a New Year's paper since 2007 , which is dedicated to the woman who was honored last year on the occasion of the Sechseläuten . It has thus continued the tradition of the New Year's papers in Zurich, which have been published on January 2nd, Berchtold 's Day, since the Middle Ages .

History of the New Year papers

It has been customary since the Middle Ages for the shareholders of a drinking room to contribute to the heating of their premises at the beginning of the year by bringing wood or bundles of brushwood or paying a sum of money towards the heating costs. These contributions were called indoor heating . Originally, children brought the room heaters, they were rewarded with drinks or sweets.

Since 1645 - it started with the burger library, which was then located in the Wasserkirche - New Year's items or New Year's sheets have been handed in on Berchtold's Day. In the beginning these were copperplate engravings , which soon also contained pedagogically oriented texts for the youth.

The New Year's paper custom has been preserved to this day. However, the focus on children and adolescents has disappeared and the New Years papers have e.g. Some of them have grown into extensive scientific papers. The publications brought out for Berchtold's Day form a treasure trove of history, art, music, natural science, medicine, military affairs, etc. The focus of the images and text has remained on Zurich's cultural history.

In 2002 the Gesellschaft zu Fraumünster honored Hedwig ab Burghalden and in 2005 Mileva Einstein-Maric . A New Year's paper on their people has not yet been published.
