Neuturmstrasse 1

The Neuturmstrasse 1 building in Munich's old town is a representative corner building. It was built between 1875 and 1880 by the architect and first owner Johann Kilian Stützel in the neo-renaissance style.

history

Under King Ludwig II , the central halls served as a ballroom. The Kaim Orchestra, the predecessor of the Munich Philharmonic, also played here .

Until 1919 the property was owned by the Stützel family. After the First World War, the spacious rooms for offices in a spinning mill were divided. In 1945 the building was renovated and transformed into an antique shop by the artist and financier Manfred Rübesam. Since neither he nor his successor Erich Kaufmann was successful with it; the house was foreclosed in 1987 and taken over by the Rafael Hotels . In May 1990 the opening of the Rafael Munich took place .

The house has been owned by the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group since 2000, which operates the five-star superior Hotel Mandarin Oriental in Munich . In the stairwell there is a reconstruction of the famous Art Nouveau relief designed by August Endell from 1897.

The house has been a listed building since the 1980s. In the cellar there are remains of the historic city wall , which date from 1285 to 1337.
