Nevzat Yaşar Aşıkoğlu

Nevzat Yaşar Aşıkoğlu (* 1962 in Sivas ) is a Turkish religious educator and theologian.

Life

Aşıkoğlu completed his school education in Sivas and graduated from the theological faculty of Ankara University . There he took up a position as a research assistant in the department of religious education in 1986. From June 1987 to November 1989 he stayed in Germany for research purposes, where he completed language courses at the Goethe Institute . He then took part in lectures and seminars at the Otto Friedrich University in Bamberg in the subjects of religious education, theology, oriental studies and German studies. Aşıkoğlu participated in the work on the curriculum for the Islamic instruction in North Rhine-Westphalia and the conception of the corresponding advanced training and certificate courses for teachers.

In 1992 he obtained his dissertation The Religious Upbringing of Turkish Children in Germany. A comparative field research study between the states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg awarded the doctorate. In 1994 he completed his habilitation in religious education and in 2000 became professor in the same department. In 1995 he moved from the theological faculty of Ankara University to that of Cumhuriyet University in Sivas. In 1996 he spent three months researching Islamic religious instruction in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.

Aşıkoğlu participated in the preparation of textbooks for religious and ethical studies in primary and secondary schools in Turkey as well as in the curriculum for the imam and preacher high schools. He published in Turkish and German on religious education, intercultural education and interreligious relationships.

From 2003 to 2006 he was dean of the theological faculty of Cumhuriyet University in Sivas and from August 2013 to February 2014 general secretary of the same faculty. The 15th ordinary general meeting of the Turkish-Islamic Union of the Institute for Religion elected him on August 17th, 2014 as chairman. In January 2019, Kazim Türkmen succeeded Aşıkoğlu as CEO. He is married and has three children.
