The New College Valley is a non-iced valley on the Antarctic Ross Island . It lies between the cliffs above Caughley Beach and around 300 m east of the Mount Bird ice cap . It contains glacial moraines made from basalt and sweat slag . Some meltwater streams flow through the valley to the Ross Sea . Numerous types of algae , lichens and mosses are represented here.
The New Zealand Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 2001 after the University College in Oxford in compensation for the geographical objects in the Antarctic dry valleys , which are named after facilities at the University of Cambridge .
