The New Haven River is a river in Addison County , Vermont , United States on the west side of the Green Mountains .

The river has its source in the Lincoln parish on the eastern slope of Bread Loaf Mountain , flows a few miles northward into a populated valley and becomes the receiving water of some of the other watercourses that arise from the Bread Loaf Mountain massif. After about eight kilometers it flows through the town of South Lincoln, after about 12 kilometers it turns northwest to reach Bristol after about 22 kilometers . Here it emerges from the foothills of the Green Mountains into the plain around Lake Champlain and turns to the south, after a further three kilometers to the southwest, taking in numerous tributaries that arise from the mountains to the east. In this area, the New Haven River flows through intensively agricultural areas that belong to the town of New Haven , after which it is named. After a run of about 38 kilometers, the river flows about five kilometers north and downstream of Middlebury on the right side into Otter Creek .
The river is unregulated and largely natural. That is why he occasionally looks for a new bed when it rains heavily. Because large areas of the area around the river have been settled, property damage is common on such occasions.
Despite the large-scale agricultural use of the areas in its catchment area, the water quality of the river is so high that sport fishing in it is worthwhile. Fishing is particularly common in the upper reaches of the New Haven River and its tributaries; But fishing spots are also available right into the estuary, which are often right on the street and often even offer their own parking spaces.
