New Institution for the Formation of Character

The New Institution for the Formation of Character is a former school in the Scottish industrial estate of New Lanark in the Council Area of South Lanarkshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. It is also part of the New Lanark World Heritage Site .

history

In the mid-1780s, David Dale and his successor Robert Owen had the New Lanark wool mill complex expanded considerably. Owens established an educational system in New Lanark that was an integral part of the progressive nature of the settlement. In tandem with the New Lanark School , the New Institution for the Formation of Character, built in 1816, formed one of the pillars of this system for education of all ages. It was run after the teachings of Joseph Lancaster and offered both classrooms and common rooms. This includes a library and reading room as well as a hall for concerts and festivities, which was later also used for reading trade fairs and as a canteen.

1881, the building was expanded and now also home to a machine house that over the Mühlkanal New Lanark away with mill no. 3 was connected. Today the building houses the New Lanarks Visitor Center.

description

The classically designed building is located in the center of the complex between the New Buildings and mill No. 3. Located on a step, the building is three-story on the northeast-facing front and four-story on the back. Originally constructed symmetrically, the extension to accommodate the machine house breaks the building's symmetry. The masonry consists of irregularly hewn quarry stone blocks of various sizes, which were built into a layered masonry . Openings are bordered with natural stone in a contrasting color .

The entrance portal on the three-axis wide central projection is made with a Doric portico . The risalit closes with a triangular gable with an oculus . While 16-part lattice windows were installed on the lower floors , there are 8-part lattice windows on the top floor. The extension of the machine house protruding to the right, however, is designed with arched windows. Its two-winged entrance portal closes with a combat window . The concluding hip or half-hip roofs are covered with gray slate.
