New Minas is a town in Nova Scotia , Canada . Along with other nearby cities such as Kentville and Wolfville , the region is home to over 30,000 people.
history
Before the European colonization of the region, it was inhabited by Mi'kmaq Indians. In 1604, Samuel de Champlain sailed from Port Royal to the northeast of the Bay of Fundy into the Minas Basin . They found copper and other semi-precious stones on the coast of Cape D'Ore . With the intention of returning and starting mining, they named the region "les mines" . Initially, Acadians settled on the south bank of the Cornwallis River , which built dykes to reclaim farmland from the river and the nearby sea. In 1713, in the Peace of Utrecht , the area became part of Horton . After the British deported the Acadians in 1755, the area around New Minas lay fallow. It was only when farmers from the New England states settled down a few decades later that the village revived. During the American Revolution , loyalists also came as new settlers.
economy
Before the construction of Nova Scotia Highway 101 in the 1970s, agriculture dominated the New Minas area. Due to the convenient location of the village, between the cities of Kentville and Wolfville, several shopping centers, department stores and "fast food" chains have established themselves. Some food and agricultural processing companies also contribute to the employment of the population. New Minas is also connected to the Windsor and Hantsport Railway network.
