description
history
The New York Tribune was founded by Horace Greeley and was one of the major newspapers in the city. After Greeley's death it became one of the leading daily newspapers nationwide. And it was decided to build a new company headquarters. The nine-story skyscraper was designed by Richard Morris Hunt . Construction began in 1873 at 89 Park Row in the Civic Center , at the point where Spruce Street meets Nassau Street . The Tribune Building was completed in 1875 and was the tallest building far and wide. Only the Western Union Telegraph Building on the opposite side of City Hall Park was nearly as tall . Both buildings are considered to be the world's first skyscraper. The most striking feature is the clock tower on the southwest corner. With the construction of the Potter Building and the New York Times Building in the late 1880s, Park Row became a metropolitan area of skyscrapers. After the construction of the Pulitzer Building , the headquarters of New York World , just one block north of the Tribune Building, the title of the tallest office building in the world went to what was now called Newspaper Row .
modification
In 1903 the New York Tribune was increased by a few floors and with 18 floors now reached the height of the surrounding buildings. D'Oench & Yost was responsible for this conversion .
demolition
In 1965 the historic high-rise began to be demolished. The work was finished in 1966 and Pace University erected a new building on the area .
