The New Zealand Caribbean was ordered in 1979 by Lloyd's Leasing Ltd. of London. for the Shipping Corporation of New Zealand Ltd. After delivery began, the shipping company used the ship in the Australia / New Zealand-North America service, which it never left even under later owners. In 1985 the Shipping Corporation of New Zealand merged with the New Zealand National Line to form the New Zealand Line. The New Zealand Caribbean was taken over on September 1, 1985 in the joint fleet of the New Zealand Line , based in Wellington , where she remained until January 31, 1989. After about a year as Abacas , Cunard Ellerman took over the ship as ACT 10 , but passed it on within the shipping group on November 26, 1991. After a further seven years of traveling as Columbia Star and two shorter assignments as Mercosul Argentina and P&O Nedlloyd Luanda , it arrived on June 17, 2002 at the Chinese Mainland Shipbreakers demolition yard in Jiangyin.

The 7-hatch ship was able to transport a total of 857 TEU and was characterized by a particularly high proportion of connections for refrigerated containers. 458 TEU, of which 302 refrigerated containers were carried in the hold, and a further 399 TEU could be transported on deck. Porthole containers were used as refrigerated containers below deck, which were supplied with cold air by a ship-mounted refrigeration system with the aid of cooling rods in the hold.
