Neva polka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Neva polka is a French polka by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 288). The work was first performed on September 22, 1864 in Pavlovsk , Russia.

Remarks

This polka, which was premiered in Russia and named after the Neva River , may not have been composed by Strauss at all during the annual guest performance there. Strauss experts assume that the composer already brought the work with him in his luggage. The polka does not contain any typical Russian tonal colors. The work was first performed in Vienna on December 4, 1864 at a Strauss concert. The polka was dedicated to the Spanish Queen Isabella II , for which the composer was awarded a medal. Incidentally, the work remained in the repertoire of the Strauss Chapel for a long time. In 1899, Adolf Müller used parts of this work in the operetta Wiener Blut , which he compiled based on motifs by Johann Strauss (son) (No. 8 of the score, When I became her husband ).

The playing time on the CD listed under itemization is 3 minutes and 47 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
