Newport is the capital of the Isle of Wight , an island off the south coast of England. Newport is just north of the center of the island, at the beginning of the navigable portion of the River Medina , which flows north into the Solent . The population is 25,496 (as of 2011).
history
After the archaeological find of a Roman villa in 1926 with underfloor heating, sauna, massage room and large kitchen from around 280 AD, it can be assumed that settlement was already there at this time.
In the 12th century, the city and the island were conquered by the Normans . In 1377 during a French conquest, large parts of the city were destroyed. In 1608 Newport was declared a borough , an administrative unit.
Worth seeing
Many Georgian and Victorian houses and other buildings have been preserved. For example the colonnade-lined guild hall based on plans by the architect John Nash from 1816 together with the bell tower added in 1887. The island's history museum is now located here.
The Seaclose Park on the east bank of the Medinaflusses has been for several years the scene of the Isle of Wight rock festival .
