Craig Douglas (born August 12, 1941 in Newport on the Isle of Wight ; actually Terence "Terry" Perkins ) is a British pop singer who was particularly popular in the late 1950s and early 1960s. His biggest hit, a number one in the UK , was a cover version of Sam Cooke's "Only Sixteen" .

Life

Beginnings

Douglas was still in school and was helping a milkman during the holidays in his hometown on the Isle of Wight when he won a talent competition in 1957. This ultimately led to an appearance on the BBC - TV show Six-Five Special , where he appeared in a show with Cliff Richard and Joe Brown was seen. Thanks to his performance and the good connections of the show's producer , Jack Good , Craig received a recording deal with Decca Records . But his first three singles flopped.

Only after a change to the Top Rank - Label career really took off. His first hit was a version of Dion and the Belmonts ' "A Teenager in Love," which took him to # 13 on the UK charts . Craig remained a cover singer throughout his career - eight of his nine top 20 hits had previously been recorded by US performers.

The young star

His next attempt was "Only Sixteen" , a song that Lou Adler , Herb Alpert and Sam Cooke had written under the common pseudonym Barbara Campbell . Five days before Craig celebrated his 18th birthday, the single hit the UK charts, and from September 11, 1959 it was number one for four weeks - while Sam Cooke's version only came to number 23.

Craig Douglas was voted "Best New Singer" of 1959 in Great Britain. In the years that followed, the hits continued, he made appearances in film and television . Among other things, he and Helen Shapiro played the leading roles in Richard Lester's first directorial work , “It's Trad, Dad” (English title: “Twen Hitparade”) in 1962 , which also featured stars like Gene Vincent , Del Shannon , Gary US Bonds , Chubby Checker or Mr. Acker Bilk had cameos . In late 1962 he went on tour with Little Richard and others . In Liverpool they got a new band as opening act for their performance , which had just released their first record : The Beatles .

The pop singer
