New York, mid-1970s. Views of busy and inanimate streets, the New York subway and - in the long final shot - Manhattan, taken from the retreating Staten Island Ferry. To this end, Chantal Akerman reads letters from her mother addressed to her - written in Brussels, sent to her daughter, who lives in distant New York.
