The News of the World Championship was a premium snooker tournament that was played from 1950–1959. Compared to the World Snooker Championship , it was seen as the more important tournament. It gained this status mainly through the participation of Joe Davis , who had not participated in the World Cup since 1947.

history

The premier post-war snooker tournament, sponsored by Sunday newspaper News of the World , with £ 1,500 in prize money. The first and permanent venue until it was dissolved in 1959 was Leicester Square Hall in London .

The tournament was played in the so-called round robin or round- robin format. A handicap system was used in all tournaments , in which all participants were given a 20-point lead per frame over the outstanding player Joe Davis . This measure had an effect, which is why other players were able to achieve one or more victories. Davis was still the most successful player in this tournament with three wins.

There were also an unusually large number of high breaks during this period . Four breaks with 140 or more points were played. The new record of 146 points, however, was played again in 1955 by Joe Davis.

In 1959, when the tournament was last played, the game was played in the Snooker Plus format. Joe Davis had presented the game he had further developed on October 26th of that year in Burroughes Hall in London.
