Ngcobo [ ˈŋǀʱɔːbɔː ] (until 2004 Engcobo ) is a city in the South African province of Eastern Cape . It is located in the Chris Hani district in Engcobo parish , of which it is the administrative seat.

Ngcobo has 9,835 inhabitants (2011 census). Most residents speak isiXhosa as their first language .

history

On November 1, 1859 the All Saints' Day , met the head of the amaQwathi, Fubu, to missionaries of the Anglican Association Society of the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. As a result, was mission station All Saints Mission founded. In 1876 a magistrate's seat was laid out eight kilometers from the mission station in Engcobo (isiXhosa; German, for example: "Sweet grass"). In 1879 the amaQwathi rebelled and burned down the mission station and magistrate building. In 1881 the town hall was reopened.

Near engcobo local municipality was the boarding school Clarkebury Boarding Institute, which was attended by Thembu boys, including from 1936 to 1937 of Nelson Mandela . Until 1994 Engcobo belonged to the Homeland Transkei . In 2004 the place was renamed Ngcobo .

On February 21, 2018, five police officers and one former soldier were shot dead at the local police station. Police shot seven suspects three days later.

Ngcobo is on the R81 trunk road from Mthatha near Queenstown . In Ngcobo the R58 branches off towards Aliwal North .
