Nguyễn Đình Thi

Nguyễn Đình Thi (* 1924 in what is now Laos, then a French colony of Vietnam, † 2003 in Hanoi ) was a Vietnamese writer , literary scholar , musician and composer . He is considered one of the most famous writers in Vietnam .

Life

He was born in Phong Saly near the former royal city of Luang Prabang in northern Laos . At that time, the region belonged to the French colony of French Indochina as a protectorate . As a son from a wealthy middle-class family, he received an academic education at French schools. As an intellectual he put himself at the service of the national liberation struggle under communist auspices. For many years he was chairman of the national association of writers. Like Bert Brecht, he stood up for artistic independence throughout his life. Some of his plays have been banned. His songs made him popular with the common people.

As a writer, he emerged primarily as a poet . His poems are considered classic, in the national tradition. He has also written plays, essays , novels and short stories. As a literary critic he was feared. Only two stories have been translated into German, published in 1968 and 1970 in the GDR series Das neue Abenteuer (The New Adventure) , and a volume of poetry that was posthumously published in two languages ​​for the 2006 Frankfurt Book Fair . In THO - poetry is a co-production of the Friendship Society Vietnam with the publisher Kim Dong. The translation into German was done by the emeritus Marburg professor of German studies Günter Giesenfeld , who as chairman of the friendship society maintained personal and friendly relations with Nguyễn Đình Thi for many years. The composer Đặng Hữu Phúc set his poems to music as a choral symphony, Đất nước.
