The Niam-Niam parrot ( Poicephalus crassus ) is a species from the long-winged parrot genus . Together with the other species of this genus, as well as the gray parrot , the lovebirds , the Rose-ringed Parakeet and Madagascar endemic Vasa Parrots this type is a typical parrot species of Afrotropical . However, the species status of the Niam-Niam parrot is controversial. It is possible that these species are unusual color mutations of the brown-headed parrot or hybrids between golden- headed parrots and brown-headed parrots . The Niam-Niam parrot, along with the yellow-headed parrot, is considered to be the least explored African parrot species. Its distribution area is the border area between the Central African Republic and Cameroon. Birds of this species have also been observed in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their habitat are wooded savannahs and forests up to a height of 1000 meters. Similar to the gray-headed parrot, they are usually observed near bodies of water.

The basic color of the plumage is green. The plumage on the neck and head is dark brown. The ear covers are silver gray. The lower bill is yellowish horn-colored while the upper bill is gray-brown to blackish.
