Nicholas Keynes Humphrey (born March 27, 1943 ) is a British psychologist . Until 2008 he was professor at the London School of Economics and at the New School in New York City .

Life

Humphrey attended Westminster School from 1956-61 . His BA (1964) and his Ph.D. (1968) in Psychology from the University of Cambridge . He has held professorships at the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford and the London School of Economics. Among other things, he studied mountain gorillas with Dian Fossey in Rwanda. His work on evolutionary psychology has received numerous awards (the Martin Luther King Memorial Prize, the Pufendorf Medal, and the British Psychological Society's Book Award).

family

Humphrey is the son of immunologist John H. Humphrey and his wife Janet Humphrey (née Hill) is the daughter of Nobel Prize winner Archibald Hill . John Maynard Keynes is his great-uncle. He was later married to Caroline Waddington , daughter of CH Waddington . After the separation he lived with Susannah York . He later married Ayla Kohn with whom he has two children.
