Nick & June 2017

Nick & June is an indie folk project from Nuremberg around singer and songwriter Nick Wolf. In 2013 the debut album "Flavor & Sin" was released, in 2017 the successor "My November My" was released. In addition to Wolf, the current cast consists of Suzie-Lou Kraft, Yoshi Noka and Florian Helleken.

history

In 2011 Nick Wolf founded the Nick & June project. Together with producer Udo Rinklin (including Philipp Poisel), the recordings for the first album began. When a female second voice - initially only intended for the recording session - was sought, Julia Kalass got on. At the end of 2012, the first 5-track EP Homesick Blues was released on Bullet Records. Then Nick & June played the first tour as a duo.

In autumn 2013, the debut album Flavor & Sin (Bullet Records) was released. The release Little Things reached the German airplay charts. The album received very good reviews throughout. The outstanding compositions, the wistful, polyphonic singing and the filigree arrangements were particularly praised. Comparisons were made with Angus & Julia Stone , Damien Rice or Bon Iver . After Flavor & Sin , Nick & June toured six European countries and played around 300 concerts by the end of 2016. In the summer of 2015, Nick & June directed Home Is Where the Heart Hurts Pt. 1 to the soundtrack of the movie About a Girl . The single developed over time to the most successful song Nick & Junes and was also the first release of the second album.

Drummer Florian Helleken joined the band in autumn 2015, and Suzie-Lou Kraft joined the band on bass and vocals at the end of 2016. In autumn 2016, Nick & June signed with the indie label AdP Records . In January 2017 the EP and 7 " Once in a Life" were released as the second advance single. The EP made it into both the German and British singer-songwriter iTunes charts.

On March 31, 2017, the second album My November My was released. The long player is structured as a concept album around the fictional character November Boy , the texts were originally written as a prose work divided into chapters, were subsequently transferred in lyrical form and finally in song form. Musically, Nick & June move away from the purely acoustic singer-songwriter folk to more spherical sounds, more epic song structures and sound games with post-rock influences. The album again received very good reviews.

live

Originally founded as a solo project, Nick & June toured as a duo from 2012. At the beginning it was exclusively made up of acoustic instruments (guitar, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, percussion, glockenspiel, melodica, harmonica), but the instrumental spectrum was expanded over time. Nick & June now also appear as a band with drums, bass, piano, organ, synthesizer, electric guitar, electric bow and accordion.

Style and reception

Nick & June's music is described as “dreamy, sad and beautiful indie pop (…) between optimism and melancholy”, “tender and poetic”, “magical”, melancholic, acoustic and in low-fi . Nick Wolf is highlighted as an “outstanding songwriter”, the lyrics remain thoughtful and create a “dreamlike and melancholy-playful world”. and "difficult moods". Comparisons are mostly made to Angus & Julia Stone, Damien Rice, Glen Hansard and Bon Iver, but also to Nick Cave or Simon & Garfunkel .
