reception

About a Girl was celebrated by the audience at the German premiere in Hof. All three performances were sold out. The film was also received positively by the press.

Die Welt said About a Girl was "a film of bad, quick-witted, morbid dialogues - which German cinema can rarely do". The film service rated the tragicomedy as a “furious adolescence story that captivates with linguistic comedy, strange characters and sometimes monstrous slapstick and makes the characters plausible even in absurd moments” and praised the “excellent staging of a youthful search for identity”. Spiegel online called the filmic narrative "a search for the fault in the system" and analyzed "the suicide attempt fits into the life shown and yet falls out of it. It kind of makes sense. And then again not at all. It's disturbing. Therein lies the intelligence of this film. ”The Rolling Stone said“ the questions about the nature of friendship and love or the meaning of melancholy and death form the necessary counterbalance to the brash, to-the-point dialogues . They make this film a jewel of young German cinema. ”The Frankenpost also praised“ brilliant dialogues made of peppered squabbles, tests of trust and brittle emotional signals ”and stated“ a lot of joke flashes from all angles, but there is still room for tragic relining ”. Deutschlandradio Kultur emphasized the “pointed script” and said “the film owes its unusual speed primarily to the dialogues.” Friday judged “the film tells of growing up with beautiful boldness.” Unikat called the film “an ode to life with everyone its ups and downs. And as paradoxical as it may sound, it is also an ode to death, which is what makes life so valuable. " Tip magazine highlighted the acting performance of the leading actress:" Jasna Fritzi Bauer is already 25, but you buy one from the teen without any problems. Monheim said he asked Bauer if she still wanted to play a teen and she said, 'Not really, but the script is so awesome!' She was right. ”The Oberbayerische Volksblatt wrote on the subject of the film:“ Sounds depressing? On the contrary. Seldom has a film about suicide been so life-affirming! The dialogues are funny but never silly; cynical but never pejorative; light-footed, but never shallow. Nothing is kitschized here, but life is viewed mercilessly. "

The Italian online magazine beSpoke wrote after the European premiere at the Rome International Film Festival “the real standing ovation was for“ About a Girl ”by the German director Mark Monheim: protagonist is the fifteen-year-old Charleen, who is going through an adolescent crisis , and from a failed suicide attempt she finds the meaning of a life that is not always lively but not even perpetually dark. Amazing screenplay, incredible the co-protagonists, starting from the headshrinker who lights up the scene with a true smart irony and makes us want to lie down on that couch. "The American magazine Stage Buddy wrote" the movie is intelligent and unconventional, sprinkled with a touch of whimsy à la Amelie and reminiscent of American independent films such as Garden State and Juno. The charismatic Bauer imbues the part with wit and humor. "

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , however, saw the film more critically and judged "the film shows what happens when a too good script holds a wild teen captive."
