Nicolas (Nico) Prien (born November 7, 1994 in Schönberg ) is a German windsurfer . He competes in the German regatta series DWC as well as in the international PWA World Cups. In 2019 Prien, sailing with the sailing number GER-7, became German champion in the overall category and the individual racing discipline. He was also voted Sportsman of the Year in Schleswig-Holstein .

Life

Prien grew up on the Baltic Sea. He started windsurfing at the age of 12 and sailed his first regattas in 2010. After his first successes, he concentrated on professional windsurfing after graduating from high school in 2013. In addition to his main job as an athlete, Prien studies marketing. He is married to the windsurfer Alara Baykent. In addition to participating in competitions, Prien has also been featured on YouTube with regular videos since 2018, in which he gives insights into his everyday life as a professional and offers tutorials on windsurfing.

successes

Nico Prien was voted windsurfing talent of the year at the boot trade fair in 2013. In the same year he also competed in a World Cup at the Windsurf World Cup Sylt for the first time . In 2016 he finished second in the overall DWC ranking behind Vincent Langer . In 2017 he finished third both in the German racing championships and on the entire DWC tour. In 2018 he won the German racing championship on Sylt and finished fourth overall. He also finished the world championship in slalom in fifth place.

2019 was Priens' most successful year so far: He won the German championships (shared first place with Gunnar Asmussen) as well as the entire DWC Tour, and he also came first in the racing sub-discipline. He also finished the PWA world tour in Foil in 13th place. At the end of the year he was nominated by the LSV Schleswig-Holstein for Sportsman of the Year in Schleswig-Holstein, whose election he won.
