Windsurf World Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Windsurfing World Cup is the professional - regatta series, in the windsurfing be determined world champion in several disciplines. It has been held since 1983 and has been run by the Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA) under the name PWA Worldtour since 1996 .

The Windsurf World Cup is the most highly endowed competition for windsurfers. In a single discipline, the prize money sometimes reaches € 55,000. The total prize money for the individual events is up to € 120,000 ( World Cup Sylt ). The Windsurf World Cup tries to market the sport in a media-effective way and achieves the highest media presence of all windsurfing frigates worldwide. Since 2011 the competitions can be followed with Ben Proffitt as commentator through live streaming and live rating on the PWA website.

The regatta series is held annually at different surf spots . Depending on the surf spot, competitions of different disciplines take place. Several disciplines are driven in a Grand Slam . If an organizer can raise enough prize money and offer an attractive event, he has the option of registering a regatta with the PWA as a World Cup. In the early days only a few World Cups were held. Up to forty World Cups were held in the early 1990s, and in the last few years there have been ten to fifteen events per year.

The Windsurf World Cup was originally hosted by the World Sailboards Manufacturers Association (WSMA), a manufacturers' association. 1987 athletes founded at the World Cup in Guadeloupe , the Professional Board Sailors Association (PBA). In 1995 the PBA was liquidated due to over-indebtedness and the PWA was founded by the active athletes as a successor organization.

Disciplines

The PWA currently organizes regattas in the disciplines of wave riding, freestyle and slalom 42 and foil. From 2003 to 2006, the Super X discipline was also held. Before that, titles in slalom, course races, racing and an overall title were awarded. Occasionally, competitions are held in the hall.

Other organizations award the speed world championship title ( International Speed World Cup , ISWA, formerly ISA) or titles in certain board classes ( International Sailing Federation , ISAF).

Wave riding

Robby Naish at the World Cup off Sylt, 2006

The wave discipline is often referred to as the premier class. The competition will be held in the surf zone if there are enough waves. Two drivers compete against each other in the knockout system . In a 15-minute run, jumps over the waves and riding the waves are judged by the judges. Depending on the conditions, up to two wave rides (wave riding, with good waves) and up to two jumps (jump, with strong wind) are scored.

Freestyle

Kiri Thode doing freestyle

The freestyle discipline was added in 1998. Since then, freestyle has developed a lot: The aim is to show the most unusual tricks possible with board and sail. The difficulty also lies in quickly learning the constantly new freestyle moves and mastering them safely. The best execution in each category is taken into account in the evaluation. The driver with the most points wins.

In wave riding and freestyle, two drivers compete against each other in the knockout system . Up to four athletes can be on the water per decision. The respective first advance one round. In the final, the winner of the single elimination (first round) will be determined from the two remaining players. The winner is also the World Cup winner, provided z. B. due to the weather conditions no further races are possible. However, if the conditions permit, a double elimination is started. The winner of this second round, which is also played in the knockout system, meets the winner of the single elimination in the final. One victory is enough for them to win the overall ranking of the competition. His challenger, on the other hand, needs two finals for overall victory. In freestyle, a maximum of two single and two double eliminations can be driven per event, while in wave riding only one single and one double elimination is allowed.

In freestyle and wave riding, the athlete must be within a competition zone so that his / her performance can be scored. Internationally experienced judges grade the height and difficulty of the jumps and maneuvers shown as well as the quality of the overall performance.

Slalom / Racing / Slalom 42

Slalom is about driving around a course that is marked out with buoys as quickly as possible . The course has the shape of a figure eight or resembles a 'W' that is driven downwind (downwind slalom). The legs of the courses are short compared to a course race. Planing , accelerating and jibing are essential to victory .

In 1995 slalom and course races were combined into one rating, racing. More flexible courses were introduced.

Since the courses are quite small, the slalom is carried out in a knockout system, in which about 10 drivers compete against each other in one run.

Slalom 42

In 2006 racing was replaced by Slalom 42. The courses correspond to the slalom. According to the current regulations, the opponents have four series sails and two series boards (“42”) that they can choose themselves. This opens up chances of victory for a broader group of drivers, as not any amount of material can be purchased and makes traveling with the material easier.

With Slalom 42, up to four decisions can be made per day. The field of participants in each of these elimination rounds is divided into groups of up to ten starters. The best 50% in each case reach the next round, until a maximum of 10 participants remain. These contest the final. The losers in the semi-finals fight for the other places in the Losers Final. A maximum of fifteen decision rounds per event is permitted. The winner gets 0.7 points, the counters of the following are identical to their placement. The overall winner is the slalom rider with the lowest number of points over all races driven in an event.

Jumpsuit

In the early years, the PWA awarded an overall title. This was calculated from the placements in wave riding, course races and slalom or later racing. The freestyle rating was not taken into account. Since there are only a few drivers left in several disciplines today, this title will no longer be awarded.

Course race

In a course race, all participants drive around a larger course at the same time. The course includes a cross and a space sheet course . Start and finish are close together. Course races can be started in relatively light winds. The material must be able to run at a good height. Boards with swords were still used in the course races in the early years . It corresponds most closely to classic regatta sailing . Due to the high organizational effort and the lack of spectator friendliness, the PWA no longer organizes course races today.

Super X

The Super X (Super Cross) is a race in which some prescribed jumps and maneuvers have to be demonstrated. There are obstacles on the course that must be jumped over. The Super X was introduced in 2003 and has not been held since 2007.

Indoor

World Cups have occasionally been held in the hall since 1990. The wind is generated with a number of fans . There are slalom, freestyle and wave competitions. The results are recorded in a separate evaluation. In 1998 there was an indoor competition in Berlin.

Junior World Cup

After there have been junior heats at World Cup events and world champions have been crowned in the previous years, the PWA introduced its own tour in 2018.

World title

The titles 1983–1987 were awarded by the WBA. The titles 1988-1995 were awarded by the PBA.
