Stephan van den Berg (born February 20, 1962 in Hoorn ) is a former Dutch windsurfer . He became the first Olympic champion in windsurfing in 1984 and won the world championship title in course races in 1986 and 1987 .

biography

In 1979 van den Berg started competing in windsurfing as a teenager after reading from Robby Naish . His first major success was the 1984 Summer Olympics . Here he became Olympic champion in the windsurfing ( wind glider ) discipline that was newly added to the program . During these games he had to fight against low winds, because as a heavy participant he was at a disadvantage compared to his lighter opponents. He was only able to win gold in the last race by finishing third there. Because of this achievement, he was named Sportsman of the Year in the same year . After the games he became a professional windsurfer. In 1986 and 1987 van den Berg was world champion in the course racing discipline . In 1991 he ended his professional windsurfing career to take part in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona . He was able to qualify for this, but was only 7th in the final.

Van den Berg and his brothers founded the sports shop VandenBergSurf in Hoorn . There is now a branch in Zandvoort and Velsen-Zuid . The business specializes in the distribution of articles for windsurfing, kite surfing , SUP , water sports and winter sports .
