Thomas John Mitchell "Tom" Ashley , ONZM (born February 11, 1984 in Auckland ) is a former New Zealand windsurfer .
successes
Tom Ashley took part in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and 2008 in Beijing . In 2004 he took tenth place in the Mistral boat class with 98 points. Four years later, the games in the boat class RS: X were much more successful for him: after ten races he was tied with Nick Dempsey one point behind Julien Bontemps , so he had to end up ahead of both of them in the final so-called medal race to win the gold medal. He achieved this with a third place in front of Bontemps in fourth and Dempsey in seventh, with which Ashley finally became Olympic champion ahead of Bontemps and Shahar Zubari . In the same year, he also won the RS: X World Championship in his native Auckland, after having finished second in Nago-Torbole two years earlier .
At the end of 2008 he received the Officer's Cross of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his Olympic success . Ashley is a lawyer and serves in the New Zealand Canoe Racing Association.
